Condenser microphones

Variable capacitance is the basis for the operation of condenser microphones. To put it simply, they function like a battery. A magnetic plate behind the diaphragm is vibrated by sound waves. This results in an increase in voltage that is provided to the microphone’s output after being passed through a phantom power source (+48V). You won’t get much signal at all without this phantom power supply because the voltage won’t be increased. Additionally, some condensers may be equipped with an integrated high pass filter, integrated pads, and a switch to adjust the polar pattern.

Dynamic microphones

Dynamic microphones use a magnet to convert sound waves into a voltage. In essence, they function in reverse of speakers. Sound waves in a speaker are produced by the diaphragm vibrating due to electricity. Conversely, sound waves are used by dynamic microphones to cause the diaphragm to vibrate and produce electricity. Sound is produced by increasing this electricity via a transformer and sending it to the microphone’s output.
