Behringer SB 78A Overview

Designed for studio and stage, the Behringer SB 78A is a low-cost condenser mic ideal for capturing detailed vocals and acoustic instruments. By swapping out the typical dynamic capsule found on most handheld mics with a condenser, Behringer delivers a versatile cardioid mic with a high sensitivity and smooth mid presence.

The cardioid pickup pattern is tuned to reject off-axis noises, improving the clarity of your voice and avoiding feedback. The wide, flat frequency response captures nuance while a gentle mid-frequency boost optimizes the sound of vocals and acoustic instruments. The SB 78A sports a very-high signal output, making it easier for your performance to cut through the mix, while the high max SPL of 136 dB ensures you won’t distort your mic from with an epic vocal run. The integrated wind and pop filter further help to avoid distortions, pops, or unwanted noises, even when bringing the mic close, and the integrated shockmount prevents handling noises from creeping into your performance. The SB 78A includes a mic stand adapter and a rugged carrying case.

Why a Condenser Mic?

While most stage mics intended for vocals are typically rugged dynamic mics, condenser mics are the superior choice for capturing vocals and acoustic instruments. Condenser mics use capsule technology with a much higher sensitivity than dynamics, allowing condensers to capture more details with a greater dynamic range and a wider, flatter frequency response. Note that unlike dynamic mics, condenser mics require power to operate, and consequently the SB 78A requires use with a preamp, mixer, PA system, or interface that provides 48V of phantom power.
